Rhizomes
Rhizomes can be propagated simply by dividing them into sections and planting them up. Each division should have at least one active bud.
This is a very easy method of plant propagation and is yet another way in your ever increasing arsenal of easy ways to propagate gardening plants. They usually grow on the surface of the soil, or just below. So when planting, the new divisions should be planted at, or about, the same depth as the original. The leaves should be cut back hard and the roots should be trimmed back to about 75mm (3 inches). A rhizome has two rows of roots growing from each side at the bottom, so when planting make sure the roots on both side are covered by soil. Bearded Iris are ideal for easy mutiple propagation by division. Crown rhizomes are not so easy to propagate. These include asparagus and peony. You should divide these in late winter before any new growth begins to start.
