Hesperis
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully

Hesperis originate from Western and Central Asia and are a genus of biennial and perennial flowering gardening plants.

Leaves are hairy, narrow and toothed.

Flowers white, purple or red and form in panicles of small star shaped scented flowers.

Family: Brassicaceae

Species: Matronalis

Common Names: Sweet rocket, dame's rocket.

Classification: Biennial.

Height: 90cm (36inches).

Flowering: From spring through summer.


Where to plant info

These are an attractive gardening plant and will suite most planting schemes.

Where: Ideal for borders and beds.

They have an excellent scent which is more prominent in the evening, similar to night scented stock. So grow them where you can enjoy their lovely scent.

Bees are attracted to their scent.

They are excellent gardening plants for woodland and wild gardens.

They can be invasive though, so you may need to keep them in check.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich and free draining soil.


Propagation info:

Hesperis self seed profusely so you can dig the seedlings up in spring and grow them on in pots or plant them in another part of your garden.

Or you can leave them where they are and let them grow on and multiply.

By seed in spring.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 14 to 21 days.
