Eupatorium
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Eupatorium originate from Eastern America and are a genus for perennial flowering gardening plants.

Leaves are eliptic to lance shape, mid green, or oval and dark green and some may be toothed.

Flowers are tiny star shaped borne on tight terminal panicles.

Family: Asteraceae/Compositae

Species: Purpureum

Common Names: Purple Joe Pye Weed, Bluestem Joe Pye Weed, Joe Pye Weed, Hemp Agrimony.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 2m (72inches).

Flowering: From summer through to autumn.


Where to plant info

Eupatorium make excellent backdrops to most mixed borders and beds with their unusual flowers and tall stature.

Where: Ideal for larger borders.

They are a great bee and insect attracting plant and are useful in wild gardens.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Eupatorium will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any moist but free draining soil.


Propagation info By seed in early to late spring.

Best germination temperature 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 3 - 6 weeks.
