Erodium
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Erodium are native to Europe, Australia, South America, Asia and Mediterranean regions.

They are a genus of mound forming perennial flowering gardening plants.

There are around sixty species within the genus.

Leaves are attractive, pinnate or two pinnate and can be hairy, toothed or very fine, delicate fern like.

Flowers are single and saucer shape and borne in short or long stemmed umbels.

These gardening plants have a long flowering period, from spring right through to end of summer.

Family: Geraniaceae

Species: Manescaui

Common Names: Herons bill, heronbill.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 45cm (18inches).

Flowering: From spring through summer.


Where to plant info

This is one of those must have gardening plants that perform exceedingly well and are very easy to care for.

Where: Ideal for front of borders and beds.

Suitable for growing in rock gardens.

These are excellent ground cover plants and will soon cover open ground quickly.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Soil: Any humus rich and very free draining soil.


Propagation Methods: By seed when ripe.

For best germination results sow the seeds as soon as you collect them.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: very slow and sporadic, can be three months onwards.

You will need to be patient, transplant any seedlings as they germinate leaving the rest of the seeds to germinate later.
