Epimedium
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Epimedium originate from woodland and shaded areas of the Mediterranean and are a genus of perennial flowering gardening plants.

Leaves are lobed, divided into leaflets and can be spiny, or ovate and finely pointed and heart to arrow shape.

Leaves have attractive markings, mainly around the edges fading towards the centre, which change colour through the season.

Flowers are tiny, almost insignificant and are spurred which can be short or long, the flowers are borne on open racemes.

Common Names: Bishop's hat, barrenwort.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 30cm (12inches).

Flowering: From spring through to end of summer.


Where to plant info

Epimedium are very popular gardening plants used in many planting schemes. They mix especially well with most other mixed bed and border plants.

Where: Ideal for ground cover in herbaceous borders and in general beds.

Site: Epimedium prefer a shady site.

Soil: Any rich, moist and free draining soil.


Propagation info By seed in late summer.

Seeds should be sown immediately after collecting or germination will be poor.

Sow in pots or trays, flats, and place in a cold frame to germinate.

Time from sowing to germination: 2 - 4 weeks.
