Dodecatheon
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Dodecatheon originate from North America and are a genus of clump forming perennial gardening plants.

Leaves are long and ovate, some of which are toothed.

The leaves grow clumped together at the base of the plant.

Flowers are similar to cyclamen and form in umbels of up to fifteen to twenty, petals are reflexed.

Flowers grow on leafless stems.

Common Names: Shooting star.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 40cm (16inches).

Flowering: From spring through to summer.


Where to plant info

Dodecatheon are well suited to semi shade positions and prefer shelter from prevailing winds.

Where: Ideal for damp borders planted with moisture loving plants.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Dodecatheon will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Acidic, humus rich and free draining.


Propagation info By seed in autumn, fall.

Before sowing place the seeds in a dry sealed container inside a fridge for 3 weeks.

Then sow normally in compost.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 3 - 6 weeks.
