Dianthus
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully

Dianthus originate from Southern Africa and are a large genus of perennial, biennial and annual gardening plants some of which have a thick and dense growing habit.

Leaves are greyish green and linear.

Flowers come in various colours and shades of red, pink, white, purple, yellow, orange, some of which are spotted with different colours or are a mix of more than one colour.

Some flowers are double.

Most species are fragrant.

They can be short lived but produce masses of flowers throughout their short season.

Carnations, pinks, are used extensively by florists in their flower arrangements.

Height: 60cm (24inches).

Flowering: From summer through autumn.




Where to plant info

Pinks, carnations, will be found growing in most gardens, usually in large sprawling groups and amongst other plants in mixed bed and border plantings.

They bring colour and fragrance to any garden.

Where: Ideal for borders and beds.

They have very aromatic flowers. Grow them near patio and garden seating areas to enjoy their scent.

They are excellent as cut flowers and make pleasant indoor displays.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Soil: Any free draining soil.


Propagation info: By seed in late spring.

Best germination temperature: 60 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 14 to 21 days.
