Delphinium
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Delphinium originate from many parts of the Northern Hemisphere and are a genus of, mainly fibrous rooted, perennial gardening plants.

Some are tuberous.

Leaves are either three, five or seven lobed and they are usually toothed or palmate.

Flowers are single, and either hooded or funnel shaped and loosely borne on upright spikes or single panicles or single racemes.

These gardening plants are more suited to cooler climates where they will flower more freely and for longer periods.

Where to plant info

Delphinium are tall showy gardening plants and are very popular in the UK and most other parts of Europe.

Where: Ideal for borders and as general bedding plants.

They make excellent island flowers.

Site: Delphinium prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Delphinium will benefit from a shady site.

Soil: Any rich and free draining soil that has been deep dug. Delphinium like to send their roots down a fair way.


Propagation info By seed in summer or autumn.

Best germination temperature: 75 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 2 - 14 days.
