Dahlia
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully

Dahlia originate from America and are a genus of annual and perennial summer flowering tuberous gardening plants.

There are around two hundred and fifty species within the genus.

Leaves are pinnate, ribbed, tooth edged and dark green.

Flower forms and colours are so diverse it is impossible to list them all here.

Species: Variabilis

Common Names: Dahlia.

Classification: Tuber.

Height: From around 40cm to 60cm (15in to 24in).

Flowering: From summer to the first frosts.


Where to plant info

Dahlia are one of the most popular gardening plants and are used extensively in many gardens in all types of settings.

There are many gardening societies with many members that concentrate solely on Dahlia growing.

Where: They are ideal as bedding plants and should be grown in large groups amongst other plants.

They are great for growing in patio tubs and containers.

Dahlia make execellent cut flowers and are used by many florists in all types of flower arrangements.

Site: They need full sun all day long. So choose a really sunny position.

To avoid damage to stems and flowers shade from winds.

Soil: They require rich and well drained soil.

On poor soils add well rotted manure at least six weeks, preferably ten, prior to planting out.


Propagation info By seed from March to April.
