How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully

Cyclamen originate from Europe and Mediterranean regions and are a genus of autumn (fall), winter and spring flowering perennial tuberous gardening plants.

Leaves are round or semi triangular, most are green with silvery or grey mottled or marbled markings.

Flowers are white, pink, red or purple and have reflexed petals.

Some flowers are scented.

Flowering: Autumn (fall), winter and spring depending on species and climate.


Where to plant info

This is one of the most widely used spring flowering gardening plants. Their popularity never seems to diminish.

They are frequently used in autumn (fall)and winter planting schemes.

It is a welcome, versatile and must have gardening plant and deserves to be popular

Where: Grow them at the front of shaded spring flowering borders or beds.

When growing the autumn (fall) and winter flowering species plant them in a semi sunny position.

They are a must under trees and shrubs, where they will naturalise.

Grow them in clumps in short grass in wildlife gardens.

They make a splendid display in raised beds.

They are ideal for rockeries, grow them in groups for best effect.

The use of cyclamen just goes on and on. Grow them in patio tubs and pots.

Grow them in pots and keep them in unheated greenhouses or conservatories. When grown in pots grouped together they make a real interesting display.

Be careful of rising temperatures on sunny days when growing under glass, provide ventilation and shade.

Provide plenty of shade from the sun and plenty of ventilation.

Site: They prefer shade from the sun.

They do best when sheltered from cold winds.

Soil: Any rich and very free draining soil.

Cyclamen self seed vigorously. Make the most of these self-seedlings.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant them individually in to 75mm (3inch) pots filled with a potting compost (peat based or non peat based).

Grow on for one to two years and transplant to their final position in spring.
