Crocus
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully

Crocus originate from Europe, China and North Africa and are a genus of autumn (fall), winter and spring flowering perennial corm gardening plants.

Leaves are grass like most of which have a broad white or cream stripe running down the center.

Flowers are in many colours, yellows, blues, white, lilacs and some have striped markings. They can be goblet or deep saucer shaped.

Some flowers are scented.

Height: 10cm (4inches).

Where to plant info

These are an extremely common, and one of the most popular, spring flowering gardening plants.

And rightly so. They have such a vast range of uses in today’s gardens, on their own in groups or mixed with other gardening plants, they can be planted almost anywhere.

Where: Grow them in groups of the same colour at the front of spring flowering borders or beds for a dramatic effect.

They are a must under trees and shrubs, where they will easily naturalise.

Grow them in groups in short grass in wildlife gardens. For the best effect grow them in groups of the same colour rather than mix them.

They make a splendid display in raised beds.

They are ideal for rockeries, grow them in groups for best effect.

The use of crocus just goes on and on. Grow them in patio tubs and pots, and don’t forget your troughs.

They are just perfect for container displays.

For a pure unadulterated pleasurable outlook grow them in window boxes. Especially kitchen window boxes, or other windows you spend a lot of time looking out of.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

They also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich and very free draining soil.
