Christmas Gaultheria berries should last a long time and their leaves are evergreen, so they are an ideal gardening plant for Christmas decorations. It is best to bring them indoors only for a couple days at a time to use for your Christmas decorations. They do not like warm, dry centrally heated rooms and their leaves will soon wilt and drop if kept indoors too long.
When they are indoors you will need to keep the compost very moist at all times, but not water-logged.
They will benefit from a mist spray a couple of times a day with tepid water.
Return them to their cool conditions outside after a couple of days indoors for about twenty four hours when you can bring them in again for another couple of days to take their place in your Christmas decorations.
Warning
Some plants can be harmful if eaten and some can cause skin irritation. It is always advisable to keep plants away from food and inquisitive little fingers.
After the festivities have ended you can either repot them into a larger pot filled with your potting compost and horticultural grit mix or plant them in the garden, somewhere shaded from midday sun and cold winter winds.
They are an excellent gardening plant and can be used in many locations, they mix well with other shrubs, perennials, biennials or annuals.
Make sure the garden soil is free draining, but moisture retentive and keep them well watered at all times, especially in hot weather.
Christmas Gaultheria are easy to propagate from seed autumn ( fall ) or by cuttings in summer or division in spring or autumn.
So that’s it then. Christmas decorations and free plants!
