Carex originate from many temperate climates worldwide and many are native to New Zealand.
It is a very large genus of tuft forming rhizomatous perennial gardening plants.
There are around one thousand five hunderd species in the genus.
Leaves are grass like, coloured green or copper which turn to red as leaves mature. Some leaves are variegated.
Flowers are insignificant and form in panicles.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!
Carex will also do well in partial shade.
Soil: They need a moist soil preferably heavy clay or boggy.

Best germination temperature: 40 deg F.
Time from sowing to germination: 2 months onwards.
