Campanula
How To Propagate
And Grow Successfully


Campanula originate from Northern Europe and are a large genus of biennial and perennial gardening plants, some of which are clump forming.

Leaves range from small heart shaped to ivy shape or oval or lance shape.

Flowers are bell shaped, funnel or star shaped.

With there being so many species, around three hundred, it makes this a very diverse garden plant.

You should have no trouble finding many that are just right for your garden beds and borders.

Common Names: Clustered Bell flower, Canterbury bell.

Classification: Biennial.

Height: 60cm (24inches).

Flowering: From spring through summer.


Where to plant info

Campanula having such a huge and diverse range of sizes shapes and colours makes them one of the most popular gardening plants today. You will always find well planted gardens have several of these delightful plants.

Where: Ideal for borders and beds.

Plant them in groups for a real dramatic effect.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich, moist but free draining soil.


Propagation info: By seed in spring or early summer.

Best germination temperature: 68 deg F.

Sow seeds on surface of compost, they need light to germinate so do not cover them.

Time from sowing to germination: 6 - 8 weeks and onwards, very eratic germination.
