Bletilla
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Bletilla originate from East Asia and are a genus of pseudobulbous perennial deciduous orchid.

Leaves are long, spear shaped with longitudinal pleats.

Semi drooping flowers which form a loose tubular cone shape are borne in terminal racemes in late spring through to summer.

Natural habitats are peaty woodlands and will do well in similar gardening conditions.

Classification: Half hardy perennial (Protect from winter frosts).

Height: 60cm (24inches).

Flowering: From spring through summer.


Where to plant info

Bletilla are excellent for growing in shaded peaty garden areas or under shrubs and bushes or in woodland settings.

Where: Ideal for borders and as general bedding plants.

Grow them in groups of five or seven for best effect.

Site: They prefer partial shade from mid-day sun.

Soil: Neutral to acid and very free draining soil.


Propagation info By division of tuber in spring.
