Astrantia
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Astrantia originate from Central and Southern Europe and West Asia and are a genus of clump forming perennials.

Leaves are deeply divided.

Flowers have five petals and star shaped on tall wiry stems.

This gardening plant self seeds profusely and can be invasive if not kept in check. It is ideal if you want lots of plants for free in just a season or two.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 60cm (24inches).

Flowering: Throughout summer.


Where to plant info

Astrantia are an excellent gardening plant for the edges of informal ponds and the extreme edges of bog gardens, or any areas where the soil is permanently moist.

Where: Ideal in borders and beds.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any moist but free draining soil.


Propagation info By seed at end of summer.

Sow seeds immediately after collecting for high germination success. Seeds do not germinate well if not sown immediately.

These gardening plants self seed freely, so to make the most of this carefully lift the self seedlings in spring and pot them up into pots using an ordinary peat free compost and grow them on.

Plant them out in their final flowering position when they are large.

Or you can just leave them where they self seed and let them grow on.

Or propagate by semi division in spring.
