Astilbe
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Astilbe originate from China, Japan and Korea.

They are a genus of clump forming rhizomatous perennial gardenig plants which are grown mainly for their panicles of flowers.

But their foliage is just as attractive as their flowers, being toothed and divided into leaflets.

Red, purple, pink or white flowers are delicate and form in dense panicles borne on tall vertical stems.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 60cm (24nches).

Flowering: Through summer to early autumn.


Where to plant info

These are an essential gardening plant if you have an informal pond or a bog garden.

Where: Ideal for mixed beds and borders that retain moisture. Grow them in groups of five or more with other gardening plants for dramatic displays.

Mix groups of different colour Astilbe in beds and borders. Red and white especially work well together.

They are perfect gardening plants to edge informal ponds, especially wildlife ponds.

They also do well in bog gardens.

Site: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Astilbe will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich and free draining soil that retains moisture well.


Propagation Methods: By division in autumn or winter.
