Aconite
How to Propagate
and Grow Successfully


Aconite originate from Europe and East Asia and are a large genus of mainly tuberous perennials.

Leaves are helmet shaped or hooded on tall spires.

Flowers are small and delicate in loose panicles.

All parts of this plant are poisonous if eaten, so care is required in its positioning in your garden if you have children or pets.

Family: Ranunculaceae

Species: A. lycoctonum

Common Names: Moonkshood, Wolf's Bane, Aconite.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 90cm (36inches).

Flowering: Throughout summer.


Where to plant info

This is one of many majestic gardening plants and is very useful in most locations.

Patience may be needed after first planting, it can take two to three years before the first flowers appear. But it is well worth the wait.

Where: Ideal in borders and beds.

Well suited to growing in wild gardens where they look natural.

Makes a good cut flower and is popular with florists.

Irritation of the skin can be caused by contact with this plant, so use it sensibly.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Fertile but free draining soil.
